92 weeks agoS3 Internal Errors

I've recieved a lot of reports from S3 Backup users who got this error: "Internal Error -- We encountered an internal error. Please try again." I've been replying to every one in person, but I guess it should be explained here. First of all, that error is issued by Amazon. Second, S3 Backup does try to handle an error and retries three times before bailing out and reporting it to the user, the retries have a 1 second delay between them. The reason for all these errors is that Amazon S3 availability dropped dramatically. There were a lot of complaints in the developer forums for all kinds of unexpected failures but rest assured that no data were ever lost. Amazon representatives explained that these issues were caused by an unexpected number of new users, my guess is that they didn't anticipate what kind of load Webmail.us will bring them (they use S3 for backups). So:

  1. Amazon promised that they will address the problem and the error rate will go down
  2. [Not released] Beta 7 has an expotential falloff, also "Internal Error" is a special case and is retried more times than others
  3. Newer versions will have a better reporting of errors and more sophisticated retry logic
